Perhaps, art begins with the fireflies
🏆 Honorary Mention · Prix Ars Electronica 2023
In 2023, the Prix Ars Electronica jury recognised “Perhaps, art begins with the fireflies” by Yuichi Oba and Nelo Akamatsu (Artificial Life & Intelligence) with a Honorary Mention.
By using modern molecular biotechnology, genes responsible for bioluminescence were isolated from the extant fireflies, then based on their DNA sequences, the ancestral sequence was reconstructed using inferential computer calculation, and finally luciferase genes of the ancient fireflies that glow green were restored.
